Trying To Be Brave - (Synopsis)

A novel first draft in progress. copyright Emily McKenzie 2009

‘Trying To Be Brave’ follows Marigold Earnest, a shy but determined actress who wants to act more and stack shelves less. She has had acting jobs and she will have another, one day. She tries to be good, she works hard but she also gets scared and suffers from great lows. Life’s a struggle for Marigold but she’s energized by the possibility of eventual success. She’s trying to make the best of her situation and find happiness wherever it may be. Her friends make this easier, especially gorgeous Martin. Things start to look up for Marigold. Then they look down. Finally, she gets the part she has been waiting for. Will it turn out to be the start of a very bright future, or will it threaten to tear apart the only thing that was holding Marigold Earnest together?

This book explores Marigold’s impression of the world and the way her life choices impact on her well being. She feels her life is out of her control and no longer feels as if she is in the driving seat. She doesn’t enjoy her ‘stand in’ job, it is not what she was put on the planet to do. In times of anxiety she self medicates by trying to understand the way she feels, she does too much thinking and is very introverted. The most important think to her, above anything else is trying to be good, trying to do the right thing. Marigold has a close circle of friends and they are a very important part of her life, especially her flatmate Stuart and eventually her boyfriend Martin. When Marigold finally gets the acting role she has been waiting for she is taken away from her support network. Very fine threads hold Marigold’s world together; there is always a feeling that one of them could snap.
